Ep 7: Two Sides of Paso (Bordeaux & Rhône) – Alta Colina Vineyard & Winery | Daou Vineyards & Winery

September 25, 2020

Paso wine country grows more than 60 different grape varieties to world-class success.  Two of France’s most prolific and historic wine regions, Bordeaux & Rhône, have popular varieties of grapes that are epic when grown in Paso.

Rhône varieties like Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, and more have excelled here for over 30 years and exploded in popularity in the early 2000s. Today we talk to Alta Colina‘s Father/Daughter duo Bob & Maggie Tillman, as well as their winemaker Molly Lonborg about this brand, and their pursuit of not only world-class Rhône variety wines but the way they have risen to the top of a shortlist of farmers who do it with some of the best success. Their grapes, as well as their wines, are in demand, and passion and personality there is infectious.

Bordeaux is in the blood of Daniel Daou. While some of the earlier Paso pioneers staked their claim on the cab, and plenty of it is grown here, Daniel came to Paso during the Rhône explosion with a mission to keep at the forefront of the mind, what is planted most here, and why this variety to him is King.  When Daniel does something, you learn, he dives in. Like deep. He shares with WWTY host Adam Montiel why Paso Cab and all grapes are so special and unique when compared to other wine regions, especially those that share the same name with a popular auto parts store. When you take on wine, and for that matter are most everything is intense and unique, and a lot of opinions and conversations seem to surface. This is the best chance to understand Daniel Daou, his process, and his passion, in his own words.

It is Harvest 2020 right now, so we will ask all the guests today what they are seeing in the vineyard, and continue to bring you more Harvest news in the episodes to follow for the next several weeks.
