Historic Halter Ranch is a vineyard and winery located in the heart of Paso Robles' Westside Adelaida District. California’s Central Coast Wine Country has ideal conditions for growing superior wine grapes and producing world-class wines. Tradition and innovation mix at Halter Ranch to produce Bordeaux and Rhône-style wines of the highest quality.
The 2000-acre estate includes 281-acres under vine and the remaining land is set aside for conservation by owner Hansjörg Wyss. Mr Wyss purchased the property in 2000, renovated Smith’s Victorian farmhouse and enlarged the vineyard. In 2011 a new production facility was completed; the state-of-the-art winery uses a multi-level gravity flow system in all aspects of the winemaking process. Gravity flow allows the winemaker to handle the fruit in the gentlest way possible, without pumping, from the destemmer at the top level, into the tanks, and ultimately into the barrel.
In the vineyard we believe that healthy vines produce better grapes. The emphasis on quality in the vineyard is complemented by a commitment to environmentally responsible grape-growing practices. Farming sustainably means relying whenever possible on organic methods of fertilization, weed removal, pest control and mildew protection. In 2008 Halter Ranch achieved the SIP Certification (Sustainability in Practice), a rigorous, third party review which certifies the winery's commitment to sustainable practices.
