Ep 14: Wine Persons of the Year – The Beckett Family of Peachy Canyon Winery

January 22, 2021

Thrilled to be back to offer a new season, a new year, which means more stories and roads to travel to see Where Wine Takes You.

This episode features a family and a brand that is a bonafide pioneer of Paso Wine, Peachy Canyon Winery. Doug Beckett made his mark in Paso in the late ’70s with Pat Wheeler and Tobias Winery. In the early ’80s, Doug and Nancy staked their claim and sunk their teeth into Zinfandel and created Peachy Canyon.

The brand has spent four decades repping Paso Wine, and Zinfandel alike. The first brand to be sold in all 50 states, Doug knew to make Peachy successful, Paso needed to be successful. He traveled the US, and the world with names like the late Kent Rosenblum (Rosenblum Cellars), and while they together made a name for Zinfandel, he was making a name for Paso Robles. Paso at the time was already a popular place to GROW grapes that others used, but Doug and Nancy were one of the absolute first to make a tasting room, and start laying the foundation for this to be the world-class wine region it is today.

Later, their sons, Josh and Jake Beckett found their way back to Paso, then opened their own winery, Chronic Cellars. It took off, and they were pioneers in their own way, with the chances, and leaps the brand took in branding, marketing, and blending. The brand was so insane with potential and popularity,  it was acquired several years ago. Now Jake and Josh are back at Peachy behind the helm for the next chapter of this very rich story. But before you think this was a winey just given to the kids, nope, think again. The story and the success are that more real and special because of the way it was earned, and the name that both Josh and Jake made for themselves in Paso and in the wine business.

Their story is delightfully imperfect, and it is so Paso. It’s full of heart, hard work, and never being afraid to trust yourself through all the ups and downs of life, and this business can throw at you.
