In 2018, we called for nominations for our first ever Wine Awards from our membership. Meant to recognize individuals and organizations that excel, these awards will be rolled out throughout the year.

We are happy to announce the recipient for the 2019 Environmental Award. This award spotlights a business that has done the most to run an environmentally conscious operation.

Drum roll please… congratulations to this year’s winner –

Halter Ranch Vineyard

Of the many fantastic wineries in Paso Robles that work hard to run an environmentally conscious operation, Halter Ranch Vineyard truly excels. Their constant effort to stay sustainable is spurned on by owner Hansjörg Wyss, an ardent conservationist, who has promised to spend $1 Billion on conservation efforts over the next 10 years. This focus on sustainability has pushed Halter Ranch Vineyard to ensure they’re as sustainable as possible. They have done this by regularly monitoring soils, plants, and weather to know when vine irrigation is necessary to keep it minimal, and by creating wildlife corridors that give animals access to watering holes and food which helps maintain biodiversity. Halter Ranch Vineyard also reduces tractor usage while working with alternative fuels to help decrease their carbon footprint. It’s with these efforts that Halter Ranch Vineyard has been able to retain a SIP certification since 2008. This has continued to pay off for Halter Ranch Vineyard, building their notoriety and helping them to earn the title of Winery of the Year at this year’s Monterey Wine Competition.
