Today we talk about the “Consulting Winemaker”. Essentially, a hired gun is commissioned to make a wine for a person, or maybe a brand, that wants to achieve a certain standard.
Unlike areas like France or other parts of the Old World even, winemakers in Paso or in California, are revered. Many are known by name, perhaps by style, and it’s not uncommon for these winemakers to make consulting a side hustle, even a living, making wines for others, in addition to their own brand.
Today on WWTY, we talk to two of the most respected of these winemakers.
Amy Butler, of Ranchero Cellars, has since scaled down much of her client list for reasons she shares with us, but her style and acumen are well respected in Paso and her brand Ranchero Cellars is a favorite for sure.
Along with Amy in this episode, we meet Anthony Yount, winemaker of the highly acclaimed Denner Vineyards. Anthony also makes the wine for many other well-respected brands like Sixmilebridge Vineyards, in addition to his and his wife’s own estate brand Royal Nonesuch Farm.
This aspect of the wine industry is pretty fascinating. Listening to the connection that Amy and Anthony have makes for a great and candid conversation the goes in a lot of fun directions.
