A PAINTING WORKSHOP WITH JOHN COSBY

The Paso Robles area is so paintable with all its country charm and Studios on the Park has a wonderful studio in which to work. Organizing a scene is the key to a successful painting. This 5-day workshop with acclaimed American Impressionist Painter John Cosby is a very effective way to learn these skills with two days of study in the studio and three out in nature. The studio days inform your color and design skills and the outdoor days apply those skills. John has found that if you cannot place your shapes correctly and with tonal accuracy in the beginning your chances of finishing well diminish. He tends to paint with strong, saturated color. This is the way he sees the world and have worked hard to figure out how to balance strong color with being true to the mood of the scene. For John finding a way to control small movements in both tone and color temperature was the key. There are many methods to achieve this control but the one John teaches and paints with involves mixing 3 to 4 tonally correct pools of color and then mixing small changes out of each pool. John has found that this method can be passed to a student relatively quickly and then once practiced will allow that artist to express themselves in a more direct manner.
