Sep 12, 2017 | Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance

The California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA) is seeking expressions of interest and qualifications from certification auditors to be accredited for the Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing (CERTIFIED SUSTAINABLE) program. Since the program’s launch in January 2010, 117 wineries and 728 vineyards 120,081 19.53% of statewide acreage and 208.87 million cases, over 77.65% of the statewide production) have been certified. For a list of the certified wineries and vineyards visit: http://www.sustainablewinegrowing.org/certifiedparticipants.php. The program has expanded both geographically and in participation over the past few years, and therefore CSWA is accepting applications from qualified candidates to be added to the auditor pool. If you are interested in becoming a CERTIFIED SUSTAINABLE accredited auditor, please review the below accreditation criteria and program information and submit a proposal, outlining your interest and qualifications, to Jodi Wilson (jodi@sustainablewinegrowing.org) by November 1, 2017.

Background The California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA) has been a leader in promoting sustainable winegrowing practices within the California wine industry. Created in 2003 by Wine Institute and the California Association of Winegrape Growers (CAWG), CSWA is a nonprofit organization that promotes environmental stewardship and social responsibility in the California wine community.

CSWA assists with the implementation of the California Sustainable Winegrowing Program (SWP), a robust collection of resources that includes the California Code of Sustainable Winegrowing (the Code), a workbook that enables growers and vintners to evaluate over 200 sustainable practices from grapes to glass against industry best practices. The Code is available online and free of charge to all California growers and vintners, and provides a clear path to integrating sustainable practices into their operations. Growers and vintners also have the opportunity to achieve third-party certification for their efforts through the Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing (CERTIFIED SUSTAINBLE) program.

CERTIFIED SUSTAINABLE verifies that vineyards and wineries use best management practices to protect the environment, conserve natural resources and operate socially responsible, thriving businesses. Originally introduced in January 2010, CERTIFIED SUSTAINABLE went through another extensive stakeholder review process in 2015-2016 to update the certification requirements to allow for the use of the certification logo on the bottle (a communication method that was not previously available to certified participants). This effort was largely driven by increasing market demand for sustainably grown and produced wine. Certified vineyards and wineries must meet defined requirements that are verified annually by third-party accredited auditors in order to achieve and maintain certification.

Scope of Work CSWA is seeking expressions of interest and qualifications from auditors to be accredited for the CERTIFIED SUSTAINABLE program. Please see the Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing Guidebook for additional details about the program. In particular, please review Section 2 (Certification Requirements), Section 3 (Certification Process), and Section 5 (Certification Administration).

Accreditation Criteria CSWA will review auditor applications and will determine the final list of accredited auditors. The selection of auditors for accreditation is entirely at CSWA’s discretion. Review criteria includes, but is not limited to, the following:

1. Auditing Experience: • Accredited and certifying to a recognized existing third party certification program, such as: o Organic o ISO 14001 o ISO 9001 o Regional wine industry sustainability certification program o Bay Area Green Business Program o Other sustainable or environmental certification program AND/OR • Minimum 20 days environmental or sustainability auditing experience as a 1st or 2nd party auditor

2. Work Experience • Minimum 2 years employment in the winegrowing sector AND/OR • Minimum 2 years employment as a manager, auditor or consultant in a field that directly relates to environmental or sustainability management AND/OR • Minimum 30 days providing services to the winegrowing industry that directly relate to sustainability programs

3. Education • Bachelor’s degree1

4. References • Two (2) character references

Auditor Training All auditors must attend an initial in-person training day (requires $500 fee and travel expenses) prior to receiving accreditation (the training is scheduled for December 12, 2017 in San Francisco). Prior to the training, all auditors should become familiar with the California Code of Sustainable Winegrowing workbook and the CERTIFIED SUSTAINABLE program requirements, prerequisites and auditing guidelines outlined in the Certification Guidebook. Once accredited, an auditor must, among other things, undertake the following training:

• Attend one SWP self-assessment, targeted education or webinar workshop (events and webinars are free of charge; travel/expenses not covered) AND • Attend an annual auditor training (often done via webinar)

61% Viognier 32% Grenache Blanc 6% Marsanne 1% Roussanne
This lot was part of a larger blend, of which we only bottled a portion. Wine was cold-fermented and continuously juice-topped throughout harvest to maintain a long, slow fermentation (using only ambient yeast). Of the estate bottled portion of this wine, Jeb Dunnuck (previously of Wine Advocate) said: "it’s impeccably balanced, has both richness and freshness, integrated acidity and a clean finish."
